It seems being John Mayer’s “chosen one” is not all it’s cracked up to be!
After a racially tinged Wednesday in the blogosphere, Miss 21 Jump Street finally came to her senses and decided to clarify her support for Mayer’s insensitive statements!
“It’s the biggest no-no of them all and coupled with the White Supremacist ‘privates’ comments it dawns hard on me that by gushing in public about a compliment by one of my fave artists in this article filled with offenses I look like I am giving him some sort of ‘free pass’ just cause he said I was cute!” Peete wrote. “Ugh! The whole picture became so vivid. And it began to scare the mess out of me.”
The critics continued to pounce when she tried to explain herself on Twitter. “By tweeting he likely wasn’t racist…and for seemingly mounting a defense for his racial insensitivities I got twitter-slapped by my peers and labeled a ‘Mammie,’ ” Peete wrote. “And after 25 years in the business that’s a first for my resume.” Peete insists she did not write the blog post to defend what she or Mayer said.
“I just hate that anyone would have the impression I condone or excuse racist comments in any context,” she wrote. “I do not. That notion would not go over too well during Kwanzaa at the Peete house! That’s so not me.”
READ FULL BLOW BELOW!
Today started out like any other Wednesday: Up at 6am. House still asleep, I’m enjoying the calm before the storm.
I painstakingly packed four healthy lunches in hopes their boxes will come back eaten & empty and no “twinkie-trades” will go down. I washed, dressed, fed, lotioned up 4 kids (I have a major phobia of ashy extremities at school so I “overgrease”-kids hate this), loaded the quartet up in the SUV and off we went to school…
Typical ho-hum “hump” day routine until I got the “link” on my iphone…
Walking back to the car from school drops with Starbucks on my mental GPS, the phone buzzes and my buddy writes : “Gurrrl, John Mayer thinks you are fine! Click here”. Prepared to cuss my friend out for sending me some sort of jibjab-u- personalize-it-gag-site, I click on the link which leads me to a Huffington Post page where there’s an edited version with ‘sound byte highlights’ of a new John Mayer Playboy article. With my “over 40” eyes and no reading glasses I scroll down over the tiny font squinting to find my name and there it was. Mayer: “I’ve always thought Holly Robinson Peete was gorgeous”. I blushed. (Yes, black girls can blush!) I should interject here that my husband and I happen to be big big Mayer fans. His song “Daughters”- among so many others- is a family fave and has served as theme music to many a Peete Family Home iMovie…
And so it began. This wouldn’t be just any Wednesday, y’all.
I decided to chat about it-I thought harmlessly -with funny/talented E! Online blogger and HollyRod Foundation supporter Marc Malkin about how I was “flattered” and “levitating” over the fact that a sexy young rock star would give this carpoolin’ mom of four a shout-out. Totally cute item, right? Not so fast. When Marc asked me what I felt about the tone of rest of the article- I said… “uh I haven’t read it”. (Oops #1) Then he quoted me the now infamous “David Duke package” passage… “Oh Damn…No-he-di’-int!” I thought. But being an @johncmayer twitter follower I’d grown accustomed to and often amused by his unpredictable, sometimes crass yet insanely witty observations. Admittedly this one caught me off guard and still not clear on the context, I said something like “Well I’m glad I came out on the good end with a positive quote” (Oops #2) smh…
I then head to shoot a PSA for the avocado industry with an aim to help the First Lady with her new mission to fight childhood obesity. While in hair and make up, I pull up the Mayer article on my iPhone -not the excerpts from HuffPo this time- but the entire thing and I start scrolling on what is quite possibly one of the longest interviews ever published and …well… there it was… The dreaded N-word. Lord Have Mercy…Mayer drop an N-Bomb and it jumped off the page hitting me in the face like a giant flying elephant!
It’s the biggest no-no of them all and coupled with the White Supremacist “privates” comments it dawns hard on me that by gushing in public about a compliment by one of my fave artists in this article filled with offenses I look like I am giving him some sort of “free pass” just cause he said I was cute! Ugh! The whole picture became so vivid. And it began to scare the mess out of me.
I seriously do not believe John Mayer is a racist. It’s such a strong word and there are real life hard core racists in this country who really deserve to wear that hat-especially these days. I sent tweets out to the effect of though his judgment is askew, his filters are dysfunctional and at times he sounded almost certifiable he isn’t a racist…by using ill advised racially inflammatory sexual metaphors he foolishly picked a fight with a demographic you don’t wanna mess with: African American Women. But by tweeting he likely wasn’t racist (oops#3 and counting) and for seemingly mounting a defense for his racial insensitivities I got twitter-slapped by my peers and labeled a “Mammie”. And after 25 years in the business that’s a first for my resume.
Surely not a typical Wednesday…
Many lessons learned today by me and I’m fairly certain by John as well. I wrote this blog not in defense of me or John, but to provide a timeline- a glimpse into my day that might provide clarity to some of my fans (and others) who can’t fathom how I could go from compassionate “mommy” to insensitive “mammy” in 8 short hours!
It all started out innocently enough… I just hate that anyone would have the impression I condone or excuse racist comments in any context. I do not. That notion would not go over too well during Kwanzaa at the Peete house! That’s so not me.
The autism community knows that one of my biggest messages is to keep an open dialogue – to listen to each other, our experiences, our words, our fears in order to understand someone else’s different world and journey they travel. It’s a message that applies not only to my son’s world but my One Crazy Wednesday World too. I’m listening tonight, and hope you are too.
There. Message sent, kids tucked and down…and
Looking forward to a much more typical Thursday.
Goodnight,
xo
