Mary J. Blige is set to play Nina Simone in biopic… I think she’ll do pretty damn good!!!
So do you think she can pull it off???
After fine-tuning her acting skills in Tyler Perry’s ‘I Can Do Bad All by Myself,’ R & B superstar singer Mary J. Blige is ready for her next big challenge as the multi-Grammy Award winner is set to play the legendary jazz musician Nina Simone in Cynthia Mort’s ‘Nina.’
Mort’s script focuses on Simone’s relationship with her assistant Clifton Henderson, who will be played by David Oyelowo, backers said.
Simone died at the age of 70 at her home in 2003.
Henderson, who was at Simone’s bedside at her death, said she died of “natural causes” in her sleep after a long illness. He refused to provide the name of the town where she lived.
“She inspired other singers to do what they believed in,” Henderson said, saying the musician would also be remembered for her activism. “She’ll definitely be looked at as a civil rights movement leader.”
Mort had previously written and directed the Jodie Foster vigilante film, ‘The Brave One,’ with Terrence Howard.
Oyelowo is also set to Martin Luther King, Jr. in Lee Daniels’ film, ‘Selma.’
Simone recorded over 40 live and studio albums, and among her well known songs include ‘My Baby Just Cares for Me,’ ‘I Put a Spell on You,’ ‘Four Women,’ ‘I Loves You Porgy,’ ‘Feeling Good,”Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,’ and ‘Sinnerman.’
The film will be shot in France in September with a budget of $10 million.
