TYLER PERRY CALLS TBS; BOONDOCK’S EPISODE PULLED FROM NETWORK!

Whatever Tyler wants, Tyler gets!

Yesterday we revealed that the writer of the Boondocks’ “Pause” episode [Rodney Barnes] was a former writer on Tyler’s ‘Meet the Browns’.   The Boondocks episode was met with Tyler firing staff members, threatening lawsuits, and making angry calls to executives TNT!!!

This article on the LA TIMES BLOG continued the investigations we started and explains the Tyler Perry vs Aaron McGruder situation more:

Perry, who has two shows on Turner’s TBS cable channel (“House of Payne” and “Meet the Browns”) was furious about a recent episode of the animated series “The Boondocks” that ran on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block. Cartoon Network also is owned by Turner Broadcasting.

The episode in question — “Pause” — which first ran June 20, lampooned Perry, the creator of several hit movies, some of whom star him as Madea, an eccentric grandmother whose antics often land her in hot water. The show, which is executive produced by Aaron McGruder, who also created the now-defunct comic strip of the same name, featured a thinly veiled version of Perry named Winston Jerome. In the episode, Jerome is shown to be a closeted cross-dresser who uses religion to hide his lifestyle.

Soon after the episode aired, Perry got in touch with executives at Turner including entertainment chief Steve Koonin and Phil Kent, the chief executive of Turner Broadcasting. Perry complained loudly about the episode and even threatened to rethink his relationship with the company, people familiar with the situation said. A spokesman for Perry declined to comment.

Kent, who is a low-key executive but also a former talent agent, put his skills to work and acknowledged to Perry that the actor-producer should have been given a warning about the episode. The show, which has aired twice, is not scheduled to air again on Cartoon Network, although the company would not say if it has been banned from the channel.

Senior executives at Turner knew the episode had the potential to cause headaches when the script for it first came in more than a year ago, people close to the show said. McGruder had wanted the show to be the season premiere, but instead “Pause” was moved (some say buried) further into the season.

In the original script, McGruder did not make much of an effort to alter the identity of the subject of his scorn; he had to be told to change the name of the character so it wouldn’t so closely resemble Perry’s. He came back with a name that was a play on Perry’s legal name, but that didn’t fly either. And, hence, Winston Jerome was born.

Damn! What did the original episode look like, if this was the ediited down version!! I don’t even want to think about it! LOL!

I will say that I don't support Tyler Perry's movies but he doesn't display hatred toward black women (a la Aaron McGruder). In all of the Boondocks episodes, how many positive black women have been portrayed? I think that Tyler's plays and movies are highly lacking in skilled writing, thought, and creativity, but I can say that Tyler consistently portrays strong black female characters. The one who needs to be lampooned in all of this is Aaron McGruder, he needs to be called out on his visible disdain of black women…

Never piss off a Queen! Come on Tyler! It's 2010! Just go on Oprah for an hour, come out and get it over with…gay men are your second largest supporters of your movies next to single black women. I don't know that many black gay men that do not have some of your movies and the funny thing is they don't buy them on bootleg.

LOLOLOLLL!!! Now I know I am going to quote some of the lines from that episode. C'mon everybody let's be real how many of us really enjoy watching the House of Payne with that wack cast. The little kids cannot act and the mother always has her eyes wide like a mammy. Meet the Browns suck a** too!! Sorry Tyler Perry stans it is the truth. Your prophet cannot write decent scripts and cannot pick decent actors (hell Keisha Knight Pulliam cannot act at all- Hello Madea goes to Jail)?

Shout out to the Black Shirtless Mafia..!!!

I love Tyler for what he's trying to do for our community but that Boondocks episode was funny as sh…! If Tyler is strong in his convictions then the only thing we'd be discussing is him checking Aaron instead of making a big fuss like a queen. You only get pissed like that when someone is speaking a truth you didn't want exposed…Think about it…I still love TP no matter what though.

For those that say that Tyler Perry lacks creatity and imagination… put up or shut up! Transforming from a homeless unemployed blackman into a successful producer thats target audience just so happens to truly support and purchase his work (even through the recession)…… sounds pretty creative to me! And success like that comes from the use of the imagination and the belief in the impossible! I DO NOT CARE FOR THE BOONDOCKS! But I respect his right of artistic expression. However, I am shocked others have not sued the makers of the show long ago! Things that are negative and offensive in nature are of no use to society. My hope is that these talented people of color use their gifts to encourage and aim to inspire!
