The Boss would’ve been proud. Late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was honored last night at Yankee Stadium’s Monument Park with the unveiling of a larger that life monument that serves as a perfect tribute to the man who successfully made the Yankees larger than life.
Commish Selig, Reggie & Yogi and the great Mariano Rivera pay tribute to The Boss.
The 7-by-5-foot, 760-pound monument of bronze atop a granite base was unveiled during a solemn ceremony Monday night attended by many of the stars Steinbrenner had feuded with and coveted in his 37-plus years as Yankees owner.
“It’s big,” Derek Jeter said. “Probably just how The Boss wanted it. The biggest one out there.”
Jeter was asked whether Steinbrenner would have liked that.
“No question,” the Yankees captain answered. “It probably was his idea.”
Steinbrenner was a rare breed of owner that demanded excellence and success from his team while demonstrating excellence himself in his successful venture of restoring the Yankees championship pedigree that made them the most fabled franchise in sports.
The Boss may be gone but his legacy and influence lives on in his most prized organization. Another anticipated World Series push this October is testament to that.
