Under the guidance of Akon, online icon Jeffree Star has spent the past year diligently recording his first major label album, with the plan being to finally make the move from being outrageous web celebrity to a bonafide superstar. But does he have what it takes??
According to the Prophet, Akon’s already had Jeffree Star in the studio with the likes of Ke$ha, Dr. Luke, and Brian Kennedy, but we have yet to hear any new music until now. With his first official single coming “soon”, Jeffree’s decided to test the musical waters by uploading two new DEMO tracks to his official Youtube channel.
Take a listen to “Prom Night” and “If It Kills Me” below…
“Prom Night” was produced by Akon and is noticeably more upbeat and less vulgar than Star’s old stuff.
My problem with Jeffree’s last album was the terrible lyricism, because sonically and melodically all the songs were top-notch, but cringeworthy lyrical cliches about violence and being beautiful just bogged everything down. Now that Jeffree’s under the Akon umbrella and singing the same overplayed club-pop as everybody else — albeit with some cussing and Jeffree-isms — he suddenly sounds a whole lot better than he ever has before. It’s just a shame that the stronger lyrics have been traded in for a less-distinctive sound, leaving Jeffree to lose his unique identity amongst Akon’s generic production.
“Prom Night” scrapes by with a pass, but the second demo, “If It Kills Me”, gets a gold star. The grittier production is more in line with Jeffree’s trademark style, giving the track the edge and Jeffree-ness that it needs to stop from getting lost in over-saturated dance-pop scene. So basically, “Prom Night” lyrics + “If It Kills Me” production = good. Do that, Jeffree.
But everyone is NOT feeling it. Some are disappointed by his mainstream generic pop sound…here’s what one commenter said:
are we back in 2010? I thought autotune crap (like Black Eyed Peas and Kesha) was over already. This sounds totally generic, this guy is never going to be a huge star.
Jeffree, aware of the cricism, left the following comment on his youtube:
90% of you make me wanna cry and kiss you…. thank you for listening. the other 10% need a Xanax. I didn’t know “mainstream” had a sound???? If GET AWAY WITH MURDER was on the radio would that be mainstream and “too different” then my music from 2007?? kids are so funny these days, everyone has 20 opinions to fit in and rebel. let artists be what they are, ARTISTS and create what they wanna create. every song I’ve ever put out doesn’t sound the same so grow with me or be stuck in the past!
Ouch! I have to say I was NOT impressed by his music so I hope these demos are quickly trashed and Jeffree starts from the drawing board. I mean he went from being compared to Lady Gaga, to now sounding like Kesha…we already have Kesha, we DON’T need a male version of her!!
Thoughts???
