After Miley Cyrus released teasers for the “We Can’t Stop” music video this past week, her video has finally been released on VEVO and to much anticipation this video has it all.. and maybe a little too much? The music video definitely displays an edgier side of Miley and she sure doesn’t care what other people think, just like she sings in the lyrics.

This video is filled with pretty much everything: a piñata filled with hotdogs, giant teddy bear backpacks and a skull made out of french fries. You may seem confused now, but you just have to watch the video to see what else happens.

[via The Grio] Now Karamo Brown is a grown 32-year-old man and is defying the odds as a single father. These days he keeps busy working as a TV host and model, while raising his two sons Jason and Chris in Los Angeles. After filming The Real World, Brown was contacted by an ex-friend from high school who had surprising news for him — he had a 9-year-old son named Jason.

“My best friend at the time, she and I, being young kids had a relationship and she got pregnant, but I wasn’t aware of it,” Brown said. “Years later after being on The Real World I was coming home one day and there was a stack of papers on the doorstep for back child support, and I was like, ‘wow, there’s a kid out there in the world that has my name.’”

Brown, who was living in Los Angeles as the time, put a halt to his career ambitions, moved back to his home state of Texas, and began the process of adopting his son Jason.

Brown remained in Texas building his new relation with Jason, and also bonded with Jason’s younger brother, Chris. Chris and Brown had an immediate bond and eventually the former Real World star not only gained full custody of his son Jason, but also Jason’s younger brother Chris. Brown says that the mother of his children is not a horrible person. On the contrary, he says she simplified the process of him getting custody of Jason and Chris.

He tells The Grio, “My sons’ mother is an amazing woman. When I said I wanted custody, she said, ‘I want my children to have a better life… I want them to have the best life that they can possibly have, and I know they will have that with you.’ So she supported me going to the courts and getting custody of my oldest son, and then getting custody of my second son.”

Brown says that his biggest obstacle in being a father is balancing his personal time and family time. “I’m single, I’m openly gay and I’m young,” he said. “So I still have all of these dreams and things that I want to do for me. I’m trying to figure how do to put time aside for myself so that I feel fulfilled, but also at the same rate balance time with my sons and make sure that they have everything they need.”

Brown’s sons Jason, 16, and Chris, 13, speak to their mother on a regular basis, although she lives in Texas, but Brown says he often feels as though he plays the role of both mom and dad.

“For the most part I play mom and dad. I cook every single night. Dinner is on the table every single night at 7:30 on the dot. I wash clothes and when one of my sons has a cut they come to me and I have to nurture them and make sure they know that they are loved and the cut will heal.”

His son Jason is an advocate for the gay community although he identifies as a straight and has a girlfriend, and when he sees someone being put down for their sexuality he constantly stands up. “I sit back and I’m amazed that somebody this young can be such a leader,” Brown says of his older son. Although Jason and Chris have thus far had positive experiences in school, they have had their fair share of obstacles.

“The biggest challenge is how ugly the world can be. Even though we’re in a different time students can make rude comments, as well as teachers,” Brown admitted. “There have been teachers who have said, ‘oh so if we talk to your wife, she’ll understand;’ and they know there’s no wife at home. It’s difficult getting past peoples ignorance and educating them so that they understand and know not to make those comments anymore.”

It’s awesome to see a glimpse of what gay, Black male, single fatherhood can be! And kudos Karamo for stepping up to the plate MORE than many of your heterosexual counterparts!

Now Idris Elba takes on the role in a new film about of the most fascinating, complex, revered figures of our generation, Nelson Mandela has a life story that profoundly speaks to unwavering courage, overwhelming compassion for people and the sheer tenacity of the human spirit. It’s a huge undertaking for any actor to capture Mandela onscreen yet Idris Elba seems poised to step up to the challenge.

The British actor was cast in the lead role of ‘Long Walk to Freedom,’ a film based on Mandela’s autobiography of the same name. The movie, which also stars Naomie Harris as Winnie, chronicles Nelson Mandela’s life from childhood to his election as the South African president.

From the look of the poster, which debuted on The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ could be a memorable, compelling film featuring a breakthrough performance by Idris Elba. The producers are betting on it; it will be released in the United States on November 29th, which is optimal timing for awards consideration.

Wow. Recently released photos of Evelyn Lozada‘s forehead after she was head-butted by her then husband, Chad Ochocinco Johnson, show a horrific, nasty, bloody gash.

The photo above and others were taken by Davie, Florida police in the emergency room where Lozada was taken after Johnson’s attack on August 11, 2012. According to police, the forehead laceration measured 3 inches.

Johnson was arrested for domestic violence shortly after the incident which grew out of an over-heated argument between the then newlyweds. Lozada filed for divorce three days later. Following the arrest, Johnson pled “no contest” to the domestic violence charge and was sentenced to 12 months probation and domestic violence classes.

The case made news again because at a probation violation sentencing hearing last week, Johnson was thrown in jail slapping his lawyer on the butt. During the hearing, the judge called the head gash photos “horrific,” reports TMZ.

According to Showbiz411, Soundscan will not count the 1 million copies of Jay Z’s new album,  Samsung bought the 1 million copies for five bucks apiece. They plan to give them out to the first million customers who download their Jay-Z app on Samsung phones and tablets beginning June 24th. The $5 million involved is part of what’s described as a $30 million marketing plan. It’s good for Jay Z and Samsung equally. But Soundscan, which counts the units sold, won’t include that number in Jay Z’s sales.

Soundscan simply doesn’t acknowledge bulk sales.

So when “Magna Carta” debuts a couple of days later in stores and on download services, forget it. Only those copies will count toward his chart position. The Samsung million will just be part of the promotion. Billboard will follow suit with Soundscan and not count the copies either. But if Soundscan doesn’t count them, then it’s likely the RIAA won’t either– and that will impinge on Jay Z getting a gold or platinum album. But hey, after 10 hit albums and millions of dollars, it’s possible he doesn’t care about that anymore. Heck, “Magna Carta” doesn’t even appear on release schedules.

Do you think the charts should include these bulk sales in their calculations for this album or not?

Destiny Jones is a grown woman! These kids grow up so fast!

This past weekend, Nas celebrated his daughter Destiny’s 19th birthday, just before Father’s Day.  To celebrate the special occasion, he rented Destiny and her friends a huge suite at the Ritz Carlton, and later accompanied them to an intimate dinner, which included cotton candy for dessert.

Coincidentally, 19 years ago Nas also fathered a classic album titled Illmatic. Back in April, Destiny tweeted:

During a recent radio interview on Shade 45, Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s son, Young Dirty Bastard, lashed out at the former Roc-A-Fella Records CEO, claiming he is currently withholding an album’s worth of material and rights to his father’s music, who was last signed to the label prior to his death in 2004. “Tell Dame Dash that I’m looking for him and I want those masters back right now,” the 24-year-old demanded to hosts J.Medina & Money Nels. “Why we gotta go through the courts when we could do this man-to-man. We need to build about it and let’s get this thing right. He got my father’s songs and I want them back…he had a nice size album and I want it.”

Page Six reports, In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court today, lawyers for the singer and for gaming outfit Gate Five signed an agreement dismissing “all claims or counterclaims” without attorneys’ fees.

“We’ve settled amicably,” said Peter Gallagher, Gate Five’s lawyer. “I can’t discuss the terms of the settlement, but it was resolved.”

Beyonce Knowles backed out of the deal a few months ago, citing funding as the reason. While, the gamers claim Mrs. Carter backed out on a whim. It was a nasty lawsuit Gate Five sued Beyonce for $100 million and accused her of destroying their business and forcing 70 people to lose their jobs right before Christmas of last year. They really made Beyonce look like the ‘Grinch who Stole Christmas’ or the mean-spirited Scrooge. But it’s a good look that this case has settled.

The Samsung deal Jay-Z signed on with earlier this month gains some clarity as Samsung will give away one million copies of Jay-Z’s new album for free to Samsung Galaxy phone users three days before the album is to be released.

The lawsuit is being heard at New Castle County Superior Court in Wilmington where Metzgar informed the court that inflatable prosthesis implant “made him feel like less of a man” according to NBCPhiladelphia.com. Metzgar also stated that he could not dance with the erection and it severely damaged his social life:

“It’s not something you want to bring out at parties and show to friends.”

Metzgar received the surgery in December of 2009 but did not have it removed until August of 2010 after his scrotum was punctured by the implant.

While Metzgar blames an error made by Dr. Desperito, the accused urologist’s attorney says Metzgar ignored Desperito’s orders to remove the prosthesis after four months which may have caused the prolonged erection.

On the backlash:

People were connecting my behavior on the show with the incident with Chad. They were like, ‘Well if she acts like that on the show, then I’m sure she acts like that at home.’ I’m a totally different person at home. -Evelyn

I was very depressed last summer. I was dealing with some things that were going on with my mother and everything that was happening with the backlash from the show. I started eating everything under the sun. I blew up to about 190-ish pounds. I’m a tall girl, so I wear it well, but I was bordering between [size] 14 and 16 in my clothes. -Tami

By the time we did the [season four] reunion we all agreed enough is enough. We had a group talk and were all definitely on the same page. We heard the messages loud and clear. We knew we had to do better. It was an eye opener. -Shaunie

On Royce Reed and Jennifer Williams:

It was a chemistry thing. It just became awkward to film or even come up with a conversation. It just wasn’t working for TV. -Shaunie

Royce has been a non-motherf—ing factor for the last two seasons, so it just didn’t make sense anymore. And as for Jennifer—Shaunie is [being] nice but I’m going to tell you this—we don’t condone the incident with Jennifer, but we do reality TV. You know something’s bound to happen when you put a bunch of women together and there’s a lot of behind the scenes conversation and gossip going on. So when Jennifer went on this whole anti-show campaign, it was a little tough for us as cast members. -Evelyn

Easier said then done! Do you believe them?

This is a note that Beyoncé wrote to Serena Williams right after Williams had finished up her French Open title run. I don’t think the letter was actually sent to Williams, but was instead posted in the “news” section of Beyoncé’s (crazy) website, which seems like a very Beyoncé way for Beyoncé to express her appreciation of a star athlete.

Listening to Dunson’s music, you can tell he’s heavily influenced by the current mix of hip-hop stars like Kanye, Drake, with some Kendrick Lamar and a sprinkle of J. Cole. That let’s us know he’s on-trend – but he’s not a “soundalike” by any stretch of the imagination. Dunson’s music feels down-to-earth, in an industry where rappers are proclaiming they are “God” – Dunson realizes that he may be flawed.

Dunson’s journey is just as unique as his music. After resigning from his career as a Baltimore-based financial advisor in 2010, the Maryland native decided to follow his dreams and pursue a career in Hip-Hop. After spending a multitude of years playing in bands of different genres, Dunson, who is also a multi-instrumentalist, took the chance to become a solo artist, focusing heavily on lyrics and production. He has since grown an internet support base proven through the success of his self-produced Creative Destruction mixtape series, and most recent release, The Investment.

As Dunson’s sound evolved, it caught the ear of Grammy-nominated production team, Phatboiz (John Legend, Ne-Yo, Miguel), with whom he eventually signed a production deal. By the summer of 2012, Dunson had performed live for packed crowds at some of New York City’s most legendary venues, such as Highline Ballroom, S.O.B.s and Santos Party House where he was featured as a BET Music Matters featured artist. Last year, he also opened for his long-time idol, John Legend in Philadelphia at Temple University. Dunson released his anticipated mixtape, The Investment, which features several guest appearances including John Legend, Bronx rapper Mickey Factz and Swedish rapper, Lazee. Dunson sat down exclusively with CarltonJordan.com to give us more insight on his journey to become the next big thang!

CJ.COM: How would you describe your sound –  what genre of music fits you most?

Dunson: The music I create is based on the whole premise of Hip Hop. To fuse multiple musical styles and influences into dope ass tracks…then express yourself over it. For me it’s Hip Hop first and foremost.

CJ.COM: How did you link up with the Grammy Award nominated Phatboiz? Is there
a lot of pressure be the first artist on their label?

Dunson: I am longtime friends with “Gravy” of the Phatboiz. We met years back when he was my cousin’s college roommate. We stayed in touch and as the Phatboiz started to form, I met “Bizkit” and “Butta”. They took notice to what I was doing on my own after I dropped a couple of projects and we set up a session together. It was on from there. Our synergy is great because we all have legitimate musical talents and the ability to take ideas to the next level. This is displayed first hand on The Investment mixtape which people say sounds more like an album! To be the first artist under Phatboiz is exciting, it doesn’t add any pressure at all…it’s only multiplied my potential and room to create!

CJ.COM: How involved are you with making your music? What’s the decision making process on songs you will record vs. ones you won’t?

Dunson: I’m very involved. Although I work with very talented producers and hook writers, I still produce the majority of my music and write most of my own hooks. I don’t record to a song that I can’t feel. Even if the track is hot, it may not be for me. Maybe the track is off and muddy, it still might provoke creativity for me so I’m all over it. The decision is really driven by whether it makes me stand up and start flowing or humming a melody.

CJ.COM: Who are some of your musical influences? Have you ever met any of them?
Who are your celebrity crushes?

Dunson: Timbaland is the reason I picked my first sequencer at age 13, Kanye made me feel confident in rapping about everyday things outside of street life. John Legend, Jay-Z, Pharrell, Phonte of Little Brother, Common, Dave Matthews Band, Badu, Radiohead & Bon Iver have dominated my playlists over the last few years. I’ve met Phonte and actually met and worked with John Legend which was an absolute honor.

I just recently worked with Chrisette Michele on her new album which drops in June, another honor! I have crushes on Keri Hilson, Rashida Jones, Halle Berry and all the chicks from Food Network.

CJ.COM: Outside of music, what other careers have you been a part of on your
path to be an artist?

Dunson: My first job was a trash man…yeah a trash man…my uncle had a trash & recycling company and would let me hop on the side of the truck during high school summers for some under the table cash so I could buy instruments! I also worked at Best Buy, was a camp counselor for a couple summers, DJ, played keys in a few bands and once I graduated, I landed my main corporate gig as an Investment Advisor.

CJ.COM: You resigned from your corporate job as a financial advisor to pursue music? What was the thought process with that?

Dunson: I didn’t mind the job, so it wasn’t because I was a disgruntled employee. I was just spending every evening and weekend either playing keys in bands, writing & producing my own music or sitting at a concert watching my favorite artists do what I wanted to do …Full-Time! So after three years of the corporate gig, I made the decision that in order to get to that point, I needed to devote 100% of my time and effort into making it happen.

CJ.COM: What can we expect from your debut album?

Dunson: The best music available! To some that may sound arrogant or lofty but Jordan didn’t put in all those hours to play mediocre basketball. When you’ve put in the hours both musically and lyrically and have a dedicated creative team like I have in Phatboiz, you don’t settle for anything but greatness. And you are brutally honest about what’s just good and what’s great. Think passionate, lush chord arrangements mixed with extraordinary melodies, heavy 808’s, live instruments and synths over creative drum patterns. Oh, and the lyrics are pretty good too! I have some crazy features already which I can’t reveal and we are just in the beginning phases.

CJ.COM: What do you think your contribution to music will be? Why is your
music needed in today’s climate?

Dunson: I’m reminding people that music is about taking chances and daring to be 100% yourself. While simplicity and certain lifestyle is what’s currently being highlighted, good music, great lyrics and a genuine messenger still blows people’s minds. I want to contribute the way Jay-Z contributed lyrically to a growing hip-hop culture and musically the way Timbaland & Pharrell shocked people with unique but addictive sound. My contribution to music in the long run will transcend any genre. I have a vast musical background and that will be revealed after I can make a wave in hip-hop first.

CJ.COM: Are you single or in a relationship? How does either effect your music?

Dunson: It sucks! I’ve tried and it all goes back to the same reason I left the day job, I personally believe that 100% of your time, emotion, creativity and effort has to be allocated to your career at this stage in this particular industry. But I’ve been through most phases of a relationship so I know how to write from different perspectives. Once everything pans out, I’ll revisit.

CJ.COM: What do you think is your sexiest feature? What feature are you mostembarrassed about?

Dunson: I’ve been told it’s my smile. I would say I’m embarrassed about my current lack of a 6-pack but I’m proud to be where I am, I was 260 pounds a few years ago! I’m still working on it damnit!

CJ.COM: How would you impress a lady on a first date?

Dunson: I’m not giving that away. No really though, just by being genuine…maybe a little creative. I’m a Mama’s boy! She’s been giving me tips for a long time now. For starters, all women like to be respected and most enjoy a good laugh.

CJ.COM: What is the thing that immediate attracts you to the opposite sex?

Dunson: It’s all about presentation. I’m past the phase where I’m just like ”It’s her shape” or “It’s her eyes”. I appreciate a young lady who is well put together. CJ.COM: How would you describe yourself in the bedroom? How freaky do you get on a scale of 1-10?

Dunson: I’m supposed to give that away too? I’ll say this, if you listen to my music, you’ll probably sense that I’m a passionate person and I get aggressive when the time is right. Freakiness 1-10? There’s a wide range of crazy shit out there so I’ll ballpark it at about 7.

CJ.COM: Do you see yourself as a sex symbol? What does it take to be one in this industry?

Dunson: Although I’m confident, I’ll never think of myself that way. That’s arrogant as hell! The people decide whether you’re a sex symbol. I’m not sure exactly what it takes but you obviously have to be easy to look at, confident and have some sort of sex appeal within your content.

CJ.COM: What is your nationality? What do people usually mistake you for?

Dunson: I’m Black! But I get mistaken for Dominican or Puerto Rican by the New York City cab drivers from time to time. Random Latinas holler at me in Spanish sometimes and I try to hang but usually fail miserably…SMH.

CJ.COM: Tell me about your latest video “Don’t Disturb” video and how did the collaboration with Mickey Factz come about?

Dunson: “Don’t Disturb” is one of my favorite tracks from The Investment. I met Mickey a few weeks before that session while he was doing some work with Phatboiz in NYC. We all went out one night and ended up back at the studio in a drunk cypher. A couple weeks later, I had an open verse on the track and called Mickey over, he blessed me with no hesitation. I was happy my man Tarik Sykes was there to break out his cameras.

CJ.COM: What was your take on Rick Ross’ lyrical controversy. Has it made you more cognizant of the lyrics you record?

Dunson: It may have been a signal to artists that we still have some level of social responsibility. Like I said, I’m a Mama’s boy…I probably wouldn’t go there. I have the ability to express myself in ways that I couldn’t a couple years ago at my 9-5. It’s a privilege because I can say what they can’t …and I love that! But if I happen to touch a controversial or extreme topic, I try to make sure it’s something I can live with.

Dunson will be featured on Chrisette Michelle’s new album “Better” due out in June. He is on track 16 and Bilal is featured on there as well. He will perf at the Hot 107.9 “He’s Next” Show in Philly May 18th and just headlined his own show in Baltimore at the 8×10.

[via Deadline] HBO has given the green light to a half-hour comedy pilot from former Late Night With Jimmy Fallon writers/performers Diallo Riddle & Bashir Salahuddin, which is executive produced by Late Night exec producer Lorne Michaels. Written by Riddle and Salahuddin, the untitled project stars the duo as Bashir and Diallo, two thirty-year old-reporters, as they try to make it big in the burgeoning black mecca of contemporary Atlanta, aka the New South. Riddle, Salahuddin and Michaels executive produce the pilot with Dave Flebotte who serves as showrunner. Andrew Singer co-executive produces.

This marks Riddle and Salahuddin’s return to HBO, which gave the two their start in the business with the Web series The Message. They went on to write for Comedy Central’s Chocolate News with David Alan Grier and, most notably, for NBC’s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, where they also regularly appeared in skits, especially Salahuddin.  Among the bits Riddle and Salahuddin wrote while on the show was Slow Jam The News With Barack Obama. Riddle and Salahuddin, who met while attending Harvard together, are the latest writers/performers from one of Michaels’ late-night shows to get a primetime project backed by him. This also marks Michaels’ second comedy pilot at HBO. He also has People In New Jersey.

Chad Johnson was just arrested in court and ordered to serve 30 days in jail after he slapped his lawyer’s butt during a court hearing where he was facing charges of violating his parole in connection to his domestic violence case involving his ex-wife Evelyn Lozada.

According to TMZ, the whole thing fell apart at the last minute, when the judge asked Chad if he was satisfied with his attorney — and the ex-NFL star reached back and playfully slapped his lawyer’s [male] ass.

Chad smiled … the court erupted with laughter …. but the judge wasn’t amused. His lawyer was super close to closing a plea deal that would have gotten Chad NO JAIL TIME, but Chad had to act like a kid and slap his lawyer’s butt. The judge felt he wasn’t taking the court seriously and the deal fell apart. Off to jail Chad goes.

In fact, the judge found the move disrespectful — and lashed out at Johnson … asking him if the whole proceeding was a “joke” to him.  Johnson replied, “I had no intent to make this a joke, because my life is in shambles right now.”

The judge — who lost her patience — suddenly announced that Chad’s deal was OFF … and kicked him out of the courtroom.

Being extremely judgmental is definitely a condition from which we, black folks specifically, cannot seem to escape. The verifiable truth stands: Blacks are invariably consistent in our walk of judgment and more apt to do so than our white and yellow compeers. Be it the need to be heard, the desire to fit in or just deeply rooted insecurities, to appraise another individual is to act on limited knowledge. What makes this particular subject of conversation worthy of a bent ear is the ever-growing cross section of our populace who share this senseless sentimentality.

Why do faithful members of a congregation, whose authoritative book frowns upon the formation of opinions, estimates or assumptions of another man or woman, turn and consciously judge their neighbor? Are church folk generationally wired to verbally level their own? Is the church truly committed to saving lives or sending its servants soul searching?

Keenly observed and later practiced, judgment is a learnt behavior, period. It is my belief judgment ages as far back as slavery where they [slaves] capitalized on the little time they were allotted to congregate as one. Sundays were traditionally the only day slaves were permitted to join together and spread messages through song. It was at church that hearsay and gossip began amongst our people. Fast forward to today, garbed fashionably in our Sundays best, we have carried out this tradition of reuniting and spreading the current irreligious escapades of well known pastors like Eddy Long and or the Catholic pedophile theatrics.

Which leads me to American recording artist Miguel’s candid tweet – “Black people are  the most judgmental.” He’s right. An evidently impassioned moment, his blast derived from a place of great disappointment. Do African Americans lack awareness on the power of their words? It seems we [African Americans] can’t seem to control our language. In this day of new digital media a huge shift has taken place where the opinions of others have become increasingly significant. Have we been generationally wired to verbally level our own people without apology? The comment sections of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have virtually accredited the opinions of the average joe. Although I lean towards keeping my opinion to myself, I too am guilty of this unfortunate act.

At the end of the day what Miguel shared is not new news – in one conversation or another we have all shared this sentiment. The focus must be on becoming better at allowing people to be who they are, where they are and for whatever reason why they are who they are in this life. Judging is birthed in a place of misunderstanding. The good news is that you are not expected to understand everything or everybody. Nevertheless, you are expected to respect your neighbor and keep your unpleasant opinions to yourself. Can we become better as a group over time or have we crossed the point of no return?

What are the first steps to getting rid of the growing culture of “judgement” amongst African Americans?

It’s often discussed how a woman can conquer juggling, motherhood, a career and a husband but with an equally famous hubby, a one year-old, and world touring, once again with candid photos on her Tumblr Bey makes it look like she’s achieved the perfect balance and even finds time for straight chillin.

With both parents serving in the military, Wiz learned first hand how much parents sacrifice for their children. Singer Jillian Parker is obviously not the first non-Black student at Howard University, but she seems to be the first non-Black singer, in recent memory, to put out a music video from the HBCU.  For clarification, seeing a non-Black student at Howard is not a rare occurrence. From my years there, I would say about 12% of the entire student population is non-Black.

Ms. Parker’s [former 2X captain of the HU's Lacrosse team] song ‘Mr. Football’ tells the story of how she fell in love, and got turned out by a Howard University football player. We’ve all been there, and done that. This video apparently stars numerous HU football and lacrosse players and is made by a soccer player from the school. Jillian writes on her Facebook: “I am trying to get signed but I need a following first – or to show I’m likable. Please help me by watching my video and re posting the link on IG, Twitter or Facebook. I need your help ”

Missick joins a cast that includes Eric Bana and Joel McHale, in a story that centers around a New York cop (Bana) who has put his faith in religion behind him, but now finds himself targeted by the devil in the form of a possessed soldier played by Sean Harris. McHale plays his partner.

Missick has signed up to play a character named Gordon, who’s described as a Bronx cop who attempts to solve strange crimes with mysterious surroundings.

Olivia Munn also stars as Bana’s wife, while Edgar Ramirez will play a renegade priest who convinces the cops that the crimes are demonic centered.

9:51AM PST:  A source closely connected to Paris tells TMZ … she has “tried this [a possible suicide attempt] in the past” but “this was far more serious.  It was not a cry for help.”

[via TMZ] Paris Jackson was rushed to the hospital early Wednesday morning, and sources tell us it was a suicide attempt. Paris was taken out of her Calabasas family house on a stretcher at around 2 AM and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

The 911 call came in at 1:27 AM. The caller said Paris had cut her wrists. On Tuesday night … Paris posted some cryptic tweets, including, “I wonder why tears are salty?” … and “yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away now it looks as though they’re here to stay.”

10. Make your music easy to find!

A lot of sites these days offer you the ability to TAG or META TAG or KEYWORD your music/presence on their respective sites (SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Tumblr, Twitter, etc.). Use this SERIOUSLY. It makes your music easier to find. For example, as a music supervisor, I deal a lot in “sound alike” searches. For example: A director says, “I need a song that sounds like Frank Ocean’s ‘Super Rich Kids,’ what can you suggest?” It’s so much easier to go to a site like Bandcamp, hit the keyword/tag “Frank Ocean”, and your music pop up. Which leads to the next tip….

9. Have contact information on your websites!

If I find a song I like, I often have to move VERY quickly. What I won’t do is sort through 50 dead links, old Myspace profiles, your mom’s Gmail address, your Twitter bio which only says “#teamjesus #teamfollowback”, and your cryptic not updated Facebook fan page with 3 likes and no other information. Create a central repository for your contact info, like an about.me page (which is free) and can host links to all of your other sites and more. If I can’t contact you, I can’t use your music.

8. Have your team (manager, publicist, cousin who handles your mixtapes) be MORE professional than you, at minimum!

There is nothing worse than dealing with a manager who knows nothing about the music business, or a publicist who sends out misspelled and grammatically incorrect press releases, or a cousin who answers the phone “Yo!” and leaves me wondering whether or not I’ve called my OWN cousin who does NOTHING in the music business. Professionalism is key. Your team represents you, and if I don’t want to deal with them, then you, the artist, are going to be out of luck.

7. Be responsive!

Music licensing and the film/TV world move VERY fast usually. There’s not more than at most, a day or two for us to turn around things and send them back to the parties that we are responsible to (music executives at film studios, account managers at ad agencies, sound editors, directors, producers, etc.). By you not being responsive, you are losing out on opportunities and money. That’s your bad. For every artist that doesn’t respond quickly, there’s another 2-3 I can find immediately that will.

6. Keep your expectations realistic!

If you are an indie artist with no major label backing, no other major film/tv placements, no real record sales of note (according to SOUNDSCAN, not “downloads”), please don’t expect to be getting thousands of dollars, depending on the placement. Most people will honestly offer you the amount that they truly have. Budgets are not as high as you think! Keep your expectations realistic, and don’t talk yourself out of some money (that, honestly, if we’re reaching out to you, is probably all but guaranteed) because you think in your mind that you’re the next Taylor Swift and your song is worth $40,000. It’s not.

5. Don’t email me individual mp3 tracks!

Don’t do this. I immediately delete your music. Ain’t nobody got time for that. Take advantage of the millions of options for streaming your music, whether it be via SoundCloud, Box.com, Dropbox, ReverbNation, anything. It’s far easier for me to stream your music, catalog it AND THEN download it if I want/need to, as opposed to you sending 10 individual emails with one 10mb mp3 attached to each email….work smarter, not harder folks.

4. Don’t send me your mixtapes.

I tell you this from the bottom of my heart — most mixtapes are a waste of time, especially if they are mixtapes where you are writing/singing/rapping over SOMEONE ELSE’S MUSIC THAT YOU DON’T HAVE THE RIGHTS TO. That’s right. You may be a great singer, but if you’re singing your “lyrics” over Chris Brown’s “Fine China” instrumental, there is nothing I can do for you, I won’t waste time to listen to it, and you’re not going to get anything but deleted with most music supervisors. Spend time and money recording and writing original music! Even if your mixtape isn’t the above, I see the word mixtape and I’m immediately leery of what is inside.

3. Know what you’re pitching for!

If you’re going to spam me via Twitter and email, fine, it’s probably unavoidable. That being said, at least take the time to do due diligence and see what my current projects are. If I’m working on a movie that is a period piece (based in a specific year or era) based in the 1940’s, but you’re sending me daily emails (which have spelling errors and terrible grammar, see #8) of your EDM-based pop songs that sound like the current Top 40, then they are going to the trash.

2. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS!

Take the time to at least attempt to build your network. Referrals go a long way in this business. Go to some events. Get some business cards. Promptly follow up. Don’t pester, but make your presence known. Stay on the radar. Be polite. Be professional. Make it easy to find your music, easy to listen to it and easy to deal with in general. That’ll get your farther than a spam email ever will.

1. CONTENT IS KING (and quality is Queen!).

Here are the keys the to kingdom:

If your music is versatile, fits more than one type of genre and situation, has great lyrics, is all original and HAS NO SAMPLES, has a great hook, builds, tells a story, is professionally mixed, mastered, and can go straight to screen from my email inbox, and you have instrumental versions, and clean/radio versions, and has lyrics and contact information embedded in the mp3 ‘comments’ field, has graphics available for an on-screen promo, you know all the writers and splits and the publishers if any that control them, have contact info for any labels that own your master(s), is registered with the performing rights societies (ASCAP, BMI or SESAC), you have a website that is clean, professional and easy to navigate, and you’re ready for radio or a record deal, then 9/10, I will listen to your music, archive it, and refer back to it in the future if it doesn’t necessarily fit for a current opportunity. More and more, independent voices are realizing their own possibilities and finding their projects a way to the big screen or small screen or Redbox no matter the cost! And such is the case for writer/director Clarity Jane [formerly known as Crystle C. Roberson], a new and exciting voice on the indie film scene.

For Ms. Jane, the path was one part inspiration, one part vision, two parts belief and a whole lot of sacrifice. CarltonJordan.com caught up with the “Echo at 11 Oak Drive” filmmaker fresh off her trip from Cannes to talk about how she creates male characters, her partnership with producer Will Packer [Obsessed, Think Like A Man, Takers] and her quiet struggles as a rising filmmaker.

CJ.COM: Where did your love of film begin?

Clarity: My love for film began with photography in high school. One of my first jobs was at a camera shop where we sold cameras, developed film, and converted people’s old home videos from film to VHS. I didn’t know it then, but I’d be working in film for the rest of my life. Working at the camera shop sparked my curiosity in photography, and I started taking pictures. I loved the peace that came with taking photos and the fact that I could save special moments forever. It was like magic.

Once I got to college and realized that movies were “motion pictures” I fell madly deeply in love with film and had some amazing mentors who guided me in that direction.

Clarity: Hmmm, the first film I can remember watching as a kid was “Imitation of Life” which was one of my mother’s favorites. My favorite movie as a kid was “The Little Mermaid” hands down. I can recite and sing that movie from top to bottom and I STILL love it! When I got a little older my favorite movie became “The Color Purple” it was the movie I was watching when I realized that movies were “motion pictures”. The performances, direction, cinematography, and just overall “classic” essence of that film was everything to me. Now, I love films of all kinds and it’s hard to pin point which is my favorite. However, I tend to really favor films that deal with the meaning of the universe and the human psyche (i.e. The Matrix).

CJ.COM: Being a woman filmmaker is incredibly difficult, not to mention – an African-American filmmaker, what pushes your forward?

Clarity: Being a filmmaker is hard enough, being a female filmmaker has its pro’s and cons. Women are naturally creative beings who put emotion and heart into every aspect of life. However, working in a male dominated industry, we are often forced to internalize these emotions and exhibit an extra tough exterior to demand respect. What pushes me forward is simply a true, undying passion. I am confident that this is my purpose and a “plan B” doesn’t exist. Film making is my life line and quitting or giving up is like giving up on life. It’s that deep for me.

CJ.COM: How does it feel to see filmmakers like Ava DuVernay and Tina Gordon Chism finally getting a seat at the film industry table?

Clarity: It feels AMAZING and refreshing. It’s so exciting to watch female filmmakers blazing new trails and literally breaking down barriers right before our eyes. I love how Ava has become a familiar face for independent film, the world should get used to seeing women who look like her at the helm.

CJ.COM: Black women have been extremely vocal about how there images are portrayed in film and television as of late. Do you think their issues are relevant or them taking art personal?

Clarity: Two things that are translated worldwide, across continents and cultures are Music and Images. Most of the time, all we have to represent us as a culture are the images that portray us. The case of the black female college students who traveled abroad to study, and were called “whores and bitches” upon arrival is mortifying. But since that’s how the people from that country identify black women through the media and music of our country, we can’t direct our anger toward them, we must attack the problem at home at it’s core.

Someone has to fight for the balance of positive images and ensure that the reputation and respect of black females is kept in tact. And, if we don’t do it, who will? And if we can’t take art personal, what can we take personal? Art is created for people to take it personally, to feel it and to react to it however they are innately guided to feel.

CJ.COM: What nuances are do you try to find in creating male characters?

Clarity: I’m an organic storyteller, which means I let the characters develop as they develop, creatively. But I will say that although the male characters I’ve created tend to vary from story to story, most of them are protectors in some form or fashion.

CJ.COM: Will Packer signed on to Executive Produce your debut feature ‘Echo At 11 Oak Drive’. How did that come about?

Clarity: Will has been a motivator in my career since I worked for Rainforest Films in 2008. Also, Symmetry Entertainment, who produced Echo at 11 Oak Drive, has been like a sister company to Rainforest for years. So, this all happened very organically and we certainly treasure his involvement in the film.

CJ.COM: What’s one of the quiet struggles you’ve experienced getting your film through the production phase?

Clarity: Making a film is tough. Making a film for very little money is down right impossible; and when we set out to do the impossible, we encountered all of the obstacles you could imagine (and some you can’t imagine). One of our quietest struggles is that we ran out of money during production and had to piece meal together small investments from reliable sources to get the film ‘in the can’. I have several gray hairs to prove it. It was, hands down, the most stressful most exhilarating period of my life to date.

CJ.COM: Rockmond Dunbar is one of the stars in “Echo at 11 Oak.” It is really tough for indies to sign notable talent for their projects. How did you get Dunbar for the film?

Clarity: Rockmond had previously worked with my producer, Dianne Ashford of Symmetry Entertainment. It was their relationship that attracted him to the project and we are very thankful for that! He was such a joy to work with, and is beyond gifted.

CJ.COM: If things on “Echo” don’t go how you’d like, would you like Iyanla Vanzant “Fix Your Life?”

Clarity: Ha Ha! Even if this film never sells one copy, it has already “succeeded” in my eyes. The purpose of this film is bigger than sales for me, it was a major milestone in my life, my career, and my overall growth as a person and a filmmaker. My late Grandfather once told me that we must define things for ourselves; so since then, I’ve decided to define “success” differently.

CJ.COM:  You managed to turn “Echo” into a short for Cannes, what was the process in making that decision?

Clarity: Cannes is a highly competitive film festival, especially for feature films. So, a good friend of mine suggested that we cut a short film to submit instead and I went into the lab and began editing right away. I didn’t aim to cut the whole film into a short, instead I took one aspect of the film and created a new short story. It felt really fresh and I knew it was the right thing to do from the moment I started.

 

CJ.COM: How in the hell did you get to Cannes and who went along with you?

Clarity: We got to Cannes by conducting a private fundraiser. Our family, friends, and fans chipped in in a major way and got us to France! We have been so fortunate with this project since day one. My Producer, Dianne Ashford, and I both went this past weekend and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my entire life. I can’t wait to go back next year, hopefully to screen another film!

CJ.COM: What are you currently working on?

Clarity: Currently, I have my Writer’s Cap on. With a few different film/TV projects in development. One could possibly shoot this summer. Stay tuned

 Screen Gems has started production on Think Like a Man Too. In the sequel to the hit comedy Think Like a Man, which was inspired by Steve Harvey’s best-selling book “Act Like a Lady, Think Like A Man,” all the couples are back for a wedding in Las Vegas. But plans for a romantic weekend go awry when their various misadventures get them into some compromising situations that threaten to derail the big event.

The film stars La La Anthony, Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Meagan Good, Regina Hall, Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Terrence J, Jenifer Lewis, Romany Malco, Gary Owen and Gabrielle Union, who all return and reprise their original roles. Adam Brody, Wendi McLendon-Covey and David Walton join the cast. Tim Story (Think Like a Man, Fantastic Four, Barbershop) returns to direct the sequel.

Will Packer (Think Like a Man, Obsessed, Takers) returns to produce via his Rainforest Films banner. “We’re excited to follow these beloved characters into the next chapter. The first movie was about our couples coming together. This one is a fun romp which explores whether these relationships can survive against the backdrop of Vegas,” says Packer.

Think Like a Man Too is scheduled for release on June 20, 2014.

An unconventional biopic of Lorraine Hansberry, author of A Raisin in the Sun, is in development, according to Shadow and Act. Hansberry’s grand-niece Taye Hansberr, will take the title role, and Issa Rae, star of The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, will play a pivotal role.

Issa Rae is set to play Nina Simone, who was a close friend of Lorraine until her death.

And Jaleel White will play James Baldwin, Hansberry’s close friend and confidant.

Will Stewart (Casting Director for Scandal) is casting the project, with additional announcements to come. 

Production is slated to begin in early fall, with the project now heading into the pre-production stage. 

Living quite an involved life, Hansberry was the first black playwright and the youngest American to win a New York Critics’ Circle award. She’s likely most-known for her seminal play about a struggling black family in Chicago, A Raisin in the Sun (a line taken from a Langston Hughes poem).

It was the first play produced on Broadway by an African American woman. It opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on March 11, 1959, and was a great success.

[via MTV News] With his first album, J. Cole told us that nobody’s perfect, and on “Crooked Smile,” the newly released track from his upcoming Born Sinner LP, he partners with TLC to celebrate his own imperfections.

“A perfect smile is more appealing, but it’s funny how/ My sh– is crooked, look at how far I done got without it/ I keep my twisted grill, just to show the kids it’s real/ We ain’t picture perfect, but we worth the picture still,” Cole raps about his teeth over a summery beat piano beat.

For the song’s hook Cole, recruits T-Boz and Chilli of TLC, one of his favorite groups growing up. Just like TLC did on their 1999 Billboard chart-topper “Unpretty,” Cole chooses to uplift and give confidence to his listeners. On the track’s second verse, he toasts to the women who are constantly judged on a strict beauty standard. “You keep fallin’ victim ’cause you’re insecure/ And when I tell you that you’re beautiful, you can’t be sure/ ‘Cause he don’t want you back and it got you askin’/ So all you see is what you lackin’ and not what you packin’,” he rhymes in a comforting tone.

On June 18, Cole will release Born Sinner. Originally he was slated to drop on June 25, but decided to move his date up a week to meet Kanye West’s upcoming Yeezus at retail. “I worked too hard to come a week later after Kanye West drops an amazing album,” Cole told Billboard on May 21. It’d be like, ‘Oh and J.Cole dropped too, a week later.’ Nah. I’m going to go see him on that date. He’s the greatest. So it’s like, I’m a competitor by nature so it was instant, it wasn’t even a thought.”

A pregnant Tamar Braxton enjoys the day in the Santa Monica Pier in the music video for “The One”, the official second single from the R&B singer’s upcoming second studio album, due in stores next September via Epic Records/Streamline. The breezy, summertime record “The One” becomes the follow-up to Tamar’s unexpected #1 US iTunes smash “Love and War”. Watch the Gil Green-directed MV for “The One” above!

Khloe Kardashian teased that while she might know the answer, the only way to find out is to tune in to the season premiere of the family’s reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, on Sunday 6/2.

Reality star Khloe Kardashian Odom talks about the newest season of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” premiering Sunday night. She says the family is “shocked” the show has been so popular, and promises that viewers will find out the sex of her sister Kim’s baby in the first episode.

The trick to this New School of Swag is how they incorporate a variety of decades, prints, flavor and a huge dose of confidence.

1. Tyga – The “Last King” is the first on the list of New School of Swag. He masters streetwear while incorporating luxury designer items such as Chanel jackets and Versace shirts. Whether he rocks a tailored solid suit with studded Louboutin flats, or jeans with a snap-back hat, Tyga is definitely heading this generation’s hip-hop fashion game.

2. Iggy Azalea – This Australian hip-hop beauty gives swag a new meaning. Her ultra toned body is perfect for her midriffs, leopards and other skin tight garents. He redefines the traditional LA trend of Chuck Taylor’s and khakis while maintaining a well groomed appearance. He is often spotted in an array of printed tops that are stylish and never feminine. He makes a pair of jeans and a t-shirt look damn good. From his past fashion history, I don’t see this rapper’s style ever going “Hollywood”.

8. Teyana Taylor – Gives a fabulous touch to create a twist on the femme tom-boy look. Her tough girl exterior is usually complimented with soft feminine touches that reveal hints of her vulnerability.  After her collaboration with Adidas, she is set up to be a trendsetter in the shoe game.

9. Tyler The Creator- Street style meets The Fresh Prince. He pairs snap backs, beanies with graphic t-shirts and hoodies. He mixes and matches stripes, florals, neon colors and tie dye patterns to create a style that is reminiscent of the 80′s/90′s with a new age swag.

10. A$AP Rocky – The rapper was previously criticized for his style being a bit feminine after wearing a “dress” on BET’s 106 & Park. A$AP pushes the boundaries and wears clothing with unusual shape and silhouette. From leather pants, to fur vests, A$AP has made a name for himself in the fashion game.

11. Childish Gambino – He has a modern gentleman style with a hint of nerdy flare. Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover is the king of the Black Nerd movement  - his music matches his style more than any other artist on our list.  Gambino makes preppy look sexy.

12. Azealia Banks- This New York rapper has a hard core edgy style. She isn’t afraid to show some skin and incorporate different fabrics and textures in her outfit. It could probably be described as Lil Kim and Katy Perry having a fashion baby.

Close Calls: Drake & Trinidad James…new stylist? Who would be on your new school of SWAG list?

Much like verified accounts on Twitter, verified Facebook pages will now display a small blue check mark beside their owner’s name on the social network. The check mark will also appear beside the individual’s name in search results, as well as anywhere else on Facebook where it appears. U fancy huh?

Just like Twitter’s verified accounts, Facebook’s verified status won’t be offered to everyone. Verified accounts will be specifically available to public figures with large audiences, namely, celebrities, government officials, popular brands and some journalists. But soon everyone and their mama will have one and it will be just as unimportant as the check next to one’s name on Twitter.

Verified Facebook Pages and profiles started rolling out Wednesday.

[via VIBE] The DreamWorks picture is a 3D comedy about a snail, Turbo, played by Ryan Reynolds, with one dream: go faster. “After a freak accident infuses him with the power of super-speed, Turbo kicks into overdrive and embarks on an extraordinary journey to achieve the seemingly impossible: competing in the world’s fasted race, the Indianapolis 500,” said a press release.

He can’t achieve that, however, without a street savvy team: enter Snoop and the crew.

Alongside stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Michelle Rodriguez and others, Snoop will essentially be playing himself – a smooth individual. His character carries his own unique perspective on the craziest twists and turns triggered by Turbo’s adventures throughout the movie.

Smoove even emulates some of Snoop’s characteristics – slimmer than all the other snails, adorning two furry, purple dice around his neck. Smoove is like the insect version of the Cali rapper.

Discovery Communications expects OWN, the cable network joint venture with Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo, to start throwing off a profit in the back-half of the year, CEO David Zaslav clarified at an investor conference Wednesday.

Discovery has previously mostly focused on predicting that the venture would reach cash flow breakeven in the second half of 2013 and then start making a profit. However, Zaslav last year also said that Discovery would start seeing such a profit from OWN in the back-half of the year.

Appearing at the Sanford C. Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference in New York in a session that was webcast, Zaslav lauded the “enormous success” and growing audience of the network. “We will be making money on OWN” later this year and are “ahead of where we thought we’d be,” he said. “Oprah is working really hard,” and OWN even has strong ratings on Saturday nights without Winfrey on the air, he said.

For the second quarter to-date, the young cable network is up 12 percent in total viewers compared to last year.

In a 2012 interview, after principal photography wrapped, Gabrielle Union had this to say about what we can expect from Being Mary Jane:

“Being Mary Jane” is basically about a television host, who has her own show, and how she balances her life. Between wanting to talk about hard hitting news and other stories, she shuffles through her own personal morals. It’s about her trying to stand up for what she believes in but also keeping her ratings. She also struggles with the idea of being raised with the same morals, values and opportunities, throughout her family and being the only one to make it. How does that change the family dynamic? Her family comes from the upper-middle class, but she is the only one out of her siblings that is doing well. Her lack of a love life and the poor choices that she has made are also explored.

On last night’s episode of Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta, K. Michelle found herself in a heated argument with Johnny (the best friend of Mimi’s now ex-boyfriend, Nikko) about his sexuality. K. Michelle reached out to B. Scott earlier this evening and explained exactly what was going on.

She explains:

I don’t have a problem with anybody being gay, but I have a major problem with someone being on the down low and misleading other people. I’ve been through my situation with a girl in the past and I was very honest and open about it. I don’t want people to think I was being insensitive to his sexuality, because that’s not the case. We’re in a society now where we’re open. If you know that you’re gay, then you need to be that and own it…that’s just my opinion. There’s nothing wrong with being gay.

At the end of the day, I wasn’t trying to ruin Mimi’s love life. I was just trying to be a friend and let her know about some things I had heard out of concern for a friend. I would never call anybody gay for no reason and I’m not a judgmental person.
On the nature of Nikko and Johnny’s relationship:

Nikko popped up out of nowhere saying he’s rich and the guy that people think is gay (Johnny), they live together! And if you’re rich, you got a roommate in Atlanta and rent is only like $1,000. I don’t understand it! I feel like he’s lying about his sexuality and these are my feelings, you can’t take them away from me. I just wanted Mimi to know how I felt. We definitely spoke on and off camera about it.

On whether or not she thinks Rasheeda’s husband Kirk is gay:
No, I don’t think Kirk’s gay (laughs). I’ve said it before, I just said that he has four earrings. He’s very feminine and sensitive, but no I don’t think he’s gay. I think a lot of men act like bitches these days, so it’s not just him.

The premise: A father is a best-in-class soldier who crash-lands with his son on a hostile planet Earth a thousand years in the future. The father, wounded, must watch from the sidelines as the son navigates treacherous terrain and fights terrible creatures in order to escape. The parallels to their adventures in Hollywood, Will says, are obvious.

I’ve read that you believe life can be understood through patterns.

Will: I’m a student of patterns. At heart, I’m a physicist. I look at everything in my life as trying to find the single equation, the theory of everything.

Do you think there is a single theory to everything?

Jaden: There’s definitely a theory to everything.

Will: When you find things that are tried and true for millennia, you can bet that it’s going to happen tomorrow?

Jaden: The sun coming up?

Will: The sun coming up, but even a little more. Like for Best Actor Oscars. Almost 90 percent of the time, it’s mental illness and historical figures, right? So, you can be pretty certain of that if you want to win—as a man; it’s very different for women. The patterns are all over the place, but for whatever reason, it’s really difficult to find the patterns in Best Actress.

Do you see patterns too, Jaden?

Jaden: I think that there is that special equation for everything, but I don’t think our mathematics have evolved enough for us to even—I think there’s, like, a whole new mathematics that we’d have to learn to get that equation.

Will: I agree with that?

Jaden: It’s beyond mathematical. It’s, like, multidimensional mathematical, if you can sort of understand what I’m saying.

Are both of you religious?

Will: No, we are students of world religion.

Seems like everyone’s excited about the idea that you might be religious?

Will: We respect all [religions].

Okay. Who would you say is the biggest star in your family?

Will and Jaden: [in unison] Willow! (Willow is Jaden’s 12-year-old sister.)

Jaden: She just knows who she is, so she just is.

Will: She has a magic power in the family. She absolutely demands the most attention, and there’s ­something really incendiary about a 12-year-old girl who says and does what she wants.

You and Jaden have acted in two movies together, including After Earth. Are you planning on a third?

Will: If you were a student of the pattern, you’d have to say we’re going to do another one.

Jaden: I definitely would do another one, absolutely. You know, how Johnny Depp and Tim Burton always do movies together, Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio? We’ll have a relationship like that.

Do you think of that as a separate relationship from your father-son relationship?

Jaden: It’s kind of like father and son, except that we’re both going to work together. [Points to his dad.] Like you worked in your family business with your dad. I’m just working in my family business with my dad. Patterns, boom.

Jaden, how was working with your father this time around different from before?

Jaden: Well, with the first movie [Pursuit of Happyness], he was teaching me along the way. This is how the camera works. You do several takes. Like, literally everything you need to know about movies. And then, in Karate Kid, he was kind of holding my hand and watching me distill those rules. And then on After Earth, he was like, All right, you’re an actor, I’m an actor, let’s make a movie together. So it was like a collaboration, you know what I’m saying?

What is your dynamic when the whole family is on the set?

Jaden: Willow basically does her thing. [They both laugh.] Dad kind of just is there. He has to feel his own vibe. And my mom is probably like, “Uh-uh. Tell Jaden he needs to do this.”

Will: Yeah, Jada [Pinkett Smith] has really powerful insights and opinions about everything.

You guys aren’t that way?

Jaden: If we’re at a six, she’s like at an eight and a half. Like, when she comes on set and she sees something that’s not right, she says, “This needs to change, this needs to leave, this needs to happen.”

Will: Yeah, I probably had a couple of poor parenting moments on this movie. Do you know what a fer-de-lance is?

Jaden: It’s one of the most poisonous snakes in all of Costa Rica.

Will: There were a couple of days where there was a high concentration of snakes [on the set].

Jaden: Fer-de-lances, not snakes! I was doing a scene, going through some tall grasses, and they said, “Hey, we caught some fer-de-lances around there, and there seems to be a lot more, and I think we should move the scene.” I was like, “How many fer-de-lances did you catch?” He’s like, “Eight.”

Will: I said, “Well, you got them all, so it’s fine. Let’s just shoot it.” Yeah, if Mommy was there, that wouldn’t have gone down. As an actor, I felt like it was an authentic experience of actually being in Costa Rica. I learned it in Ali, man, when you actually have to go to the place and you take the flight and you are actually in the authentic space, it adds to your performance.

Jaden, how does it feel to be famous?

Jaden: I think it’s fun, except when people make up stuff about you. Then it’s not so much fun. But besides that, I enjoy it.

It’s been reported that you might be dating Kylie Jenner. The Kardashians have treated their fame as the family business. Do you guys see yourselves as similar or different? [Will, laughing, holds up his hand for Jaden not to speak.]

Jaden: I’m trying to understand.

Will: Don’t. You know, he’s never had to, to deal with those kinds of questions.

Well, forget the Kardashians … maybe you could just …

Will: [Mimicking] “So how do you think your life is similar or un-similar to people’s names in Calabasas?” For our family, the entire structure of our life, our home, our business relationships—the entire purpose is for everyone to be able to create in a way that makes them happy. Fame is almost an inconsequential by-product of what we’re really trying to accomplish. We are trying to put great things into the world, we’re trying to have fun, and we’re trying to become the greatest versions of ourselves in the process of doing things we love. So the idea of fame or exploitation or orchestrating the media is sometimes even less than desirable for us.

Do you think Jaden could have been a dentist?

Will: It may seem like we have pushed our kids into the business, but that is absolutely insane. I would never, ever, push somebody to have their face on a poster that’s going be everywhere in the world. He is making a choice from the informed. It’s less scary to me than if he wanted to be a dentist in that I couldn’t help with what he’d chosen. I have relationships with some of the biggest filmmakers and actors and producers on Earth. So I can be a huge help.

Willow chose singing and then un-chose it. She said, “Daddy, I want to go to school with my friends during the week, and I want to hang out with them on the weekends.” At the peak of “Whip My Hair,” she’s like, “Daddy, I’m done.” I was like, “Wow, wow, wow. No, baby, I got Annie [the upcoming movie remake, co-produced by Jay-Z], you know. It’ll be New York, you’ll be with Beyoncé. You can bring your friends.” And she said, “Daddy, I got a better idea. How about I just be 12?” At the end of the day, it has to be their choice.

“…There are some artists who make drug references just to look cool, or just trying to appeal to somebody, right? But sh*t, dude, people have been doing that forever. It’s not even about drugs, it can be about anything—cars, whips, jewelry. Artists make music, and some artists talk about sh*t that they really live, but it’s on the listener to decipher if it’s real and if they really f*ck with it or if they’re going along with it because everyone else is. James goes on to say he can’t be blamed if kids start using Molly or even die from the drug:

“When I made that song I wasn’t thinking about the kid who was going to listen to the song. I was just speaking about my life, and if you can relate, great. But why can’t you relate to the line, “Count your blessings?” No, you want to relate to ,”‘Popped a molly, I’m sweatin’.’” That’s not my fault, you chose to listen and focus on the drug reference. That’s on you, my n*gga. I don’t feel no type of sympathy or anything, because at the end of the day I know what’s right and wrong. I’ve done wrong and I’ve done right, but these people who do stupid sh*t and blame it on rap… get the h*ll out of here. It’s your choice if you want to pull out a gun. I’ll say this though, the music does have an influence, I’m not going to say it doesn’t. But you still have a choice and a conscience that God gave you. So it’s on you.”

First Lady Michelle Obama and Scandal star Kerry Washington surprised some very excited students at Savoy Elementary School in D.C., one of the eight performance schools chosen for President Barack Obama‘s Turnaround Arts Initiative. The initiative uses the arts to improve academics and overall culture in the nation’s floudering schools.

Michelle Obama was lovely in a flowing top and beige palazzo pants, and flexed her famously fab arms for the students. Kerry was beaming in a sleek black top and harem pants. She even kicked off her shoes to get her groove on with the excited dance group!

Memorial Weekend in Miami has been jam packed with non-stop celebrity driven events but the most anticipated productions thus far have taken place at the mecca of all strip clubs known as King Of Diamonds. Artists Lil Wayne, French Montana, KK Holliday, Birdman, Gillie Da Kid and Young Jeezy all showed up and showed out for the absolute and ultimate turn up!

On Friday, May 24th French Montana celebrated the release of his album “Excuse My French” with alliances Lil Wayne, Birdman and newfound Jamaican rapper, KK Holliday who recently released a mini movie with Young Scooter entitled “Mums The Word.” Both in grand spirits, French and Birdman welcome the packed house at KOD on the mic as they rapped on top of a few of their own tracks while dancers pranced on stage and to the top of the ceiling ultimately driving the guests wild.

Then Saturday night, May 25th greeted CTE’s own Young Jeezy with a sold out crowd. Celebrating the launch of his new liquor Avion, voted the best tasting tequila in the most prestigious spirits competition. Philly artist and long time friend, Gillie Da Kid who also just released new single video on MTV Jams “Tryna Get Me On” Feat. Pusha T also joined Young Jeezy and the entire CTE family for the celebration. Jeezy who arrived with 150 guests started out the night with 50 bottles and after 1 hour ordered another 50 totaling 100 bottles for himself and his immediate on stage party.

The first trailer has come out for the David Lowery-directed [with Howard University alum, Bradford Young, as DP] drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. The film, which IFC picked up at Sundance this year, stars Casey Affleck as a man who escapes from prison and sets out across the Texas hills to reunite with his wife and the daughter he has never met.

Rooney Mara, Ben Foster, Nate Parker and Keith Carradine fill out the top flight cast. IFC Films have set the movie to come out on August 16.

The turn of the decade has seen R&B veteran Usher receive mix review for his experimentation on the Pop front.

Well, if report from top producer Eric Bellinger is anything to go by, supporters of the singer’s more rhythmic offerings needn’t fear as his newest project will see a musical mecca of sorts to his R&B beginnings.

Singer-songwriter/Music Producer Eric Bellinger (Fine China - Chris Brown) was asked the following by Billboard:

What sound is Usher going for this time around?

Usher is at a place where he’s more comfortable. With his other projects, I think he was like, “Okay. I’m going to do this because I think people may want to hear this.” But, I think this time around, he’s going to do what he wants to do in his heart and that’s R&B, the stuff that got him here in the first place. He’s done so many genres of music and excelled in every area, so now he’s like, “Cool. What’s left for me to do? I’ve done everything. So, I’m going to take it back to R&B, timeless music.”

Considering the current state of R&B, do you think Usher will be able to successfully implement that?

I definitely do. He has always done R&B, even on the last project. We did “What Happened to U.” All of those were R&B, but with a different beat. We were able to experiment on “I Care For You,” with some next level, futuristic, dub step type of music, but still with the touch of smooth R&B within the melodies. [The album] is definitely still very commercial. It’s going to be for the radio and the club. He’s still Usher. He has to lead the pack.

Thoughts?

In a new excerpt from Jonathan Jaxson‘s upcoming tell-all book Don’t You Know Who I Am Yet? obtained exclusively by RadarOnline.com, Jaxson claims that the Cheetah Girl dreamed up the whole debacle.

Back in 2008, when Adrienne was dating Rob Kardashian, she “wanted to become as famous as the top socialites she knew at the time and asked for my help,” he wrote.

“She was a very sweet girl that desperately wanted out of the kid-focused Disney star-making machine. So we had concocted a plan where we would act like her laptop was stolen at the airport in New York and she was concerned because there were nude photos on there.”

Unbeknownst to Jaxson, he claims, Adrienne then took things a step further by actually releasing X-rated shots. And when she tried to blame him for the photos getting released, he showed Disney the emails proving she was in on it all along.

“After they saw the evidence, she was released from her Disney contract,” he wrote. “And her musical group, Cheetah Girls, was promptly removed from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade because of the scandal.”

Almost five years later, he’s revealing her involvement, he says, because, “Most people don’t realize that the stars often go along with, or as in this case, even suggest the publicity stunt.”

“Sometimes you have the trends that’s not that cool,” Lamar told MTV after his set at the Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama last weekend. “You may have certain artists portraying these trends and don’t really have that lifestyle and then it gives off the wrong thing. And it becomes kinda corny after awhile. It’s really about keeping hip-hop original and pushing away the corniness in it.”

The family of late record executive and Hip Hop industry veteran Chris Lighty is seeking answers. Lighty’s mother, Jessica Brooks, along with the Violator Entertainment founder’s close friend attorney Scott Leemon are demanding additional tests from the Bronx Medical Examiner and District Attorney.

According to attorney Scott Leemon, after hours of interviews and reviewing a number of documents, many questions are still unanswered.

“The main problem that we encountered was that the NYPD did not do a thorough investigation into Chris’ death,” Scott Leemon told AllHipHop.com. “In fact, what they did do was cursory, at best.”

Scott Leemon said he is urging the Bronx County District Attorney to open a formal investigation into the death of Chris Lighty.

Lighty’s mother added: “We have uncovered real information that needs to be followed up on by those in authority.”

Multiple sources confirm exclusively to E! News [who also confirmed Bey pregnancy, which turned out to be false] that the Oscar-winning singer has signed a deal to sit at the judges’ table this fall for season 13. The other two spots are also intended for former Idol contestants: Kelly Clarkson and either Adam Lambertor Clay Aiken.

We’re told that Clarkson is also closeto signing on. No word yet on whether Lambert or Aiken will fill the final spot, but producers are expected to keep the panel to three members.

I’ve been in love a few times in my life and one of the most difficult things to do after a bad break-up is to get back up on that proverbial horse. You’re hurt, you feel a bit broken and vulnerable and the last thing you want is to open yourself up to pain again. In the past, I have found myself filling up that loneliness with work, work and more work. That did lead to success, but I as lonely as ever until… I realized something. There is no substitute for love and the only way to get it back in my life was to be vulnerable again. You can’t have love if you’re not willing to take the risk.

The Plot…

When I read “The Bounce Back” – that very same issue was at the core of the script and the character, Matthew Taylor. I saw a lot of myself in Matthew, although I’ve never written a book (but I’m thinking about it now, hint, hint). I felt a kindred spirit to what Matthew was going through and my own life. Matthew loses his wife, his first love and after a short recovery creates a best selling book and a system of survival in order to shield himself from the pain. He throws himself into a year long speaking tour.

That system of survival; his book and speaking tour, keeps him from falling in love again when he meets the perfect girl, the beautiful and zany Kristin Moreland. Matthew realizes that he has to renounce his book and the world he has created around it in order to take the big unknown plunge of letting himself fall in love again.

I think there is a wonderful poetry to that, the idea of risking it all for love. And I feel, in my heart, that is why we’re here on this planet. To love. After I put down the screenplay, “The Bounce Back,” I knew I had to make this movie simply because I believe in love all the way down to the fabric of my being.

I’ve put a solid team of game-changers together, which includes a phenomenal Director, DP, music producers and a great production crew. I’ve locked up the script and currently I’m in talks with my friend, Nadine Velasquez, who played opposite Denzel Washington in the motion picture FLIGHT. She’s some kind of sexy packed with all the zany a man can handle. All I need now, is the $$$$ to make it all happen. That’s where YOU come in.

Why this route?

After reading so many of your endless comments, remarks, compliments, and love letters that you pour onto my Twitter, Facebook and Instagram pages, I thought who better to ask for help-but you, my fans. I want to make this film for you. I know what you want. More than anyone. This movie will be an answer to the sheer loyalty and love you’ve given me over the span of my career.

I felt that with all my great friends supporting this endeavor, starting with you of course, I could bring this movie to life with a much smaller budget than most Hollywood films of this caliber. We drafted up a budget for “The Bounce Back” and trimmed all the excesses of Hollywood productions to a lean 3M. My goal would be that we’d raise all of it through Kickstarter so we could begin production immediately. If we don’t reach the ultimate goal, I believe in the project and the vision of the amazing team around me so much that I feel confident we can find the rest through regular channels… a.k.a. those dreaded financiers. At a minimum, if we raise 50% of that final budget we can make “The Bounce Back” happen, the way I envision it, with great actors like Nadine and myself and many others.

The reason I selected 1.5M as my Kickstarter goal is because that is the absolute minimum amount I need in order to make the movie I know you want to see. The decision to go for a smaller number may delay the production or deter access to the rest of the needed financing. My goal with this is to rally the amazing fans I have, leverage the super talented people I’ve surrounded myself with in order to create a movie that I believe in… a movie that I can’t wait to share with all of you!

 The only issue I see with this is the casting of the female lead…Miss Nadine won’t register with his built in Black female audience. Sorry to say….will you donate?

There’s just one problem: it isn’t true.

[via Forbes] The reports stem from a story in Variety this week about Jackson titled “Behind the Velvet Rope.” The story is connected to Jackson’s work with the charity AmFAR and is surrounded by full-page ads congratulating Jackson on being “a billion dollar entertainer.”

To be fair, the story does not specifically say that Jackson is a billionaire. It just lays out the money that her work has brought in over the span of her career including $81 million from music and book publishing, $260 million in album sales and $458 million from touring. Together with other areas of business, the revenues add up to $1.2 billion.

But that’s very different than a net worth. Net worth is based on the value of the cash and assets you have at the moment, not on how much your work has brought in over a lifetime. When we evaluate whether people will make our annual list of the World’s Billionaires, we look at things like stock holdings, real estate and art collections. Oprah Winfrey is a billionaire because of the value of her holdings in things like Discovery and Harpo Productions, not because of the ad revenue her show generated over the years.

This isn’t the first time the general press has mistaken the money brought in by someone’s business for the net worth of that individual. Jessica Simpson has been called a billionaire. My colleague Clare O’Connor did an excellent take down of claims that the Kardashians are billionaires. Madonna is also rich, but not a billionaire.

This is the same kind of situation. The word “billionaire” generates plenty of hits (we know) and so reporters, who don’t obsess about people’s wealth 12 months out of the year, don’t bother to check the facts, they just regurgitate.

Jackson owns a lot of valuable songs, likes to take ownership stakes in the products she endorses and is married to reported billionaire Wissam Al Mana (who has also never shown up on our billionaire list). She certainly may be sitting on $1 billion worth of assets. But her net worth is not at all clear from what’s being reported.

Covered California--which is charged with implementing the Affordable Care Act–will announce at 9 a.m. today the health coverage plans that will be available to the public beginning in October. This very important announcement is the latest piece in educating Californians about coverage options that will be available so that they can make informed decisions.

Covered California will announce the health insurance plans that will be offered by private insurance companies through Covered California once the marketplace goes online in the fall. These plans will be available to the 5.3 million Californians who can purchase insurance through Covered California. Many may qualify for federal subsidies to help pay for their monthly insurance premiums.

About Covered California

California was the first state to create a health benefit exchange following the passage of federal health care law. Covered California is charged with creating a new insurance marketplace in which individuals and small businesses can get access to health insurance. With coverage starting in 2014, Covered California will help individuals compare and choose a health plan that works best for their health needs and budget.

Financial help will be available from the federal government to help lower costs for people who qualify on a sliding scale. Small businesses will be able to purchase competitively priced health plans and offer their employees the ability to choose from an array of plans and may qualify for federal tax credits. Covered California is an independent part of the state government whose job is to make the new market work for California’s consumers. It is overseen by a five-member board appointed by the Governor and Legislature.
